The Legacy of Tycho Brahe B J. R. C * 1 More than two hundred years ago, the noted French historian of astronomy, J.-S. Bailly, wrote that ‘‘Copernicus is not in the same class as Tycho: he was greater as a philosopher than as an astronomer; Ptolemy and Albetegnius are of an inferior order; Hipparchus alone, despite the distance in time, rises from antiquity to be measured with Tycho’’ (Bailly 1779, 1: 378).2 This is one way of evaluating the legacy of Tycho Brahe.
For a long time, many historians of science would not have agreed: Among early modern astronomers, Copernicus, Galileo, and Kepler received much more attention than Tycho Brahe. In recent years, however, that seems to have changed.
