George Herbert (3 April 1593 – 1 March 1633) was a poet, orator and priest of the Church of England.
Born in Wales, Herbert is considered one of the most influential English poets of the 17th century and is considered to be one of the metaphysical poets. His works were largely religious poetry, with his most most famous being The Temple, The Country Parson and Jacula Prudentum.
Herbert had the intention of becoming a priest, but, upon graduating from Trinity College, Cambridge in 1609, he became the University’s Public Orator and attracted the attention of King James I.
He served in the Parliament of England in 1624 and briefly in 1625.
Upon the death of the King, Herbert was ordained as a priest and spent his remaining life in Wiltshire. However, following a life of ill-health, he died i
